In addition to the USS Massachusetts, Battleship Cove is also home to several other noteworthy and important ships including the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., USS Lionfish and the Hiddensee. Additional information can be found below and by visiting the Battleship Cove website.

USS Massachusetts

  • The ship was first commissioned on September 23, 1941 and became affectionately known as "Big Mamie" to her crew during World War II
  • During World War II, no United States Navy crewmen were killed while aboard the USS Massachusetts
  • Of the numerous battleships that were built in the first half of the 20th century, the USS Massachusetts is only one of eight that remain

USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.

  • The ship was named after Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., son of the former Ambassador to Great Britain, and older brother to President John F. Kennedy
  • The USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. was used during the Cuban Missile Crisis and in the recovery of Gemini 6 and Gemini 7
  • In 2000, the ship was used in the movie Thirteen Days, portraying herself and the USS John R. Pierce

USS Lionfish

  • The USS Lionfish is a Balao-class submarine and began her first war patrol in the Pacific on April 1, 1945
  • The submarine would go on to complete two Pacific war patrols before moving to the East Coast for training exercises
  • The last commissioned work included performing NATO exercises and a Mediterranean cruise

Hiddensee

  • The Hiddensee was built in 1984 and began life with the East German Navy, protecting the coast of Eastern Germany
  • The ship joined the Federal German Army following the reunification of Germany and was decommissioned in 1991
  • The Hiddensee was then transferred to the U.S. Nay and continued to serve throughout the East Coast until 1996
